Eridani Light Horse Chronicles 10: Strong as Steel
Other mercenary units fly flags at two flagpoles at their headquarters, one with their unit’s flag, and other bearing the flag of their current employer. However, the Third Regimental Combat Team—a.k.a. the Eridani Light Horse—leaves one flagpole bare, as a reminder of the death of the Star League, and the other pole flies the Light Horse’s unit and regimental flags at half-mast.
What triumphs and tragedies shaped the Eridani Light Horse and its traditions? What drove them to become a force to be reckoned with, an elite mercenary unit with one of the longest histories and the deepest traditions in the Inner Sphere? Witness the unit’s origins in the Star League and follow their evolution all the way through the Succession Wars and the Clan Invasion to their downfall in the Dark Age and their resurrection in the uncertain future of the ilClan era.
Part Ten: Strong as Steel by Michael J. Ciaravella: In the uncertain future following the fall of the Republic of the Sphere, the Eridani Light Horse name has reemerged, but can this reborn unit live up to the weight of its own storied history?
Blood Will Tell
Danai Liao-Centrella is many things: Solaris gladiator; proud military commander; successful diplomat. All of those roles pale beneath perhaps the heaviest responsibility of anyone in the Capellan Confederation: to speak the truth to its ruler, Chancellor Daoshen Liao. He is the undeniable dictator of hundreds of worlds. Mighty armies move at his command. Billions of lives hang on his every decision.
Against that, she must speak the truth.
And the truth is, the war with House Davion must end. Because there is a greater danger looming: the Republic of the Sphere, hiding behind its impenetrable fortress. When that wall comes down, the Confederation must be ready. It cannot be distracted. Danai will pay whatever price necessary to make Daoshen see that.
And that price will be heavy. It will force her to take on a role unlike any other: servant of the people. In the Confederation, the people are the heart of the state. When—not if—the wall falls, Danai and her regiment will be ready.
They’ll have to be ready, because behind the wall the Republic regiments are finally ready to come out of hiding. On worlds like Elgin, Hall, and Liberty, Republic forces are prepared: well-trained, and armed with weapons the Capellans have never seen.
When BattleMechs clash, Danai will have to choose between serving the Chancellor or serving the people.
Trial by Chaos
The Raging Bears have begun their occupation of the planet Vega with the hope of restoring order on a planet beset by violence and civil ruin. But their bold move to stabilize Prefecture I for the Republic of the Sphere may be the chance their enemies have been waiting for…
While the military takeover of Vega was no great challenge, setting up a new planetary government and restoring the infrastructure of civilization have proven far more difficult for the peacekeeping forces of the Rasalhague Dominion. An underground resistance stubbornly refuses to cease its operations, and Galaxy Commander Isis Bekker suspects the Draconis Combine is secretly supporting the rebellion.
As the Combine threatens them from without, the Bears also find themselves plagued by betrayal and deception from within. Unless they can expose the dissenting elements in their clan, they may end up as fodder for destruction…or usher in a new understanding of what it means to be Clan, the likes of which hasn’t been seen since their return to the Inner Sphere…
